Very “understated guys”
are popular back home. We
don’t trust a slick braggart. I
remember and long for it
though it was very quiet
and hard to know what people
were thinking. I made it up.

Morning train, afternoon train.
Woman, man. Two editions
of Kafka on the Shore. “There
is so much light in New York
that there’s no other way.” I
was the failed link, nothing to
offer but my own surprise.
